My First Monthish in Sao Paulo

Hey Everyone!

So this is my first post about all the things I've been doing since moving here, once again thanks for all your friendly emails and concern about my security, I assure I did not die in the club fire all over american news, I'm safe in Sao Paulo going to class, meeting new people, and trying all sorts of different foods!

I arrived safely to Sofia's apartment, a Brazilian student I'm staying with who showed me around town, helped me buy a phone, and took me to Di Quinta to hear live music and dance samba til 5am! Had so much fun!

Portuguese classes have been going so fast, I can't believe this week I'll finish my first round of lessons, Spanish has helped me so much in structure but hindered in pronunciation, a lot of people ask me if I'm latina :)

I've tried some awesome food thus far, but as I was warned, everything is heavy on the beef, cheese, and bread. I tried the famous bologna sandwich yesterday at the Municipal Market:

The fresh fruit juice is amazing and passion fruit, which I LOVE, is everywhere. However, Brazilians are not too fond of their veggies (which are ridiculously cheap) so I'm trying to cook at home as much as possible. Most american goods are at least double, if not triple, in price and the biggest shockers thus far are:

limited pickle availability :(
bacon exists and is DELICIOUS :)
Mustard here is honey mustard and only Heinz makes American mustard.....at $8 a bottle!

Carnaval is quickly approaching and I will be headed to Rio to celebrate with Sofia and other American and international students. The Portuguese language courses I am taking at PUC-SP are intense but super fun and we go on fieldtrips at least twice a week to museums, the market, and this week we have samba class!

Here's my class at the Latin American Memorial in downtown Sao Paulo. It was great to see Guatemalan clothes and artifacts, reminds me of my "other" home. It rains pretty much everyday here but ranges through comfortable 70s and early 80s (degrees F).
